This charming 8 5/8” plate designed by artist Froment-Richard was made in the 1870-80s by Utzschneider & Co in Sarreguemines, France. It is one of a number of character plates manufactured during this time, each delightfully decorated. With this one, we have two little girls outdoors with birds, fish and plants. One little girl is playing a horn while the other one is holding her ears! The mark on the back was used by the company from 1875-1900, but since it does not display the country of origin, it has to be pre-1891, when by international agreement, companies were required to include what country the goods were made in. In addition to the maker’s mark U & C over Sarreguemines, there is incised on the back a 2M and a light, hand mark of JT. This faience plate is in remarkable condition with no chips or cracks nor visible crazing. There are some very slight rub and scratch marks and a couple of small places where the factory missed some glazing.
This would make a wonderful addition to your faience collection or to use as a decoration. Please contact us if you have any questions.
