The colors on this wonderful majolica piece are just beautiful. The girl’s gown is a soft blue-green, and she is holding a soft purple bag with the same color shoes on. The planter is a fresh green with a garland of pink flowers in the front. The inside of the planter matches her gown color. This lovely piece measures 5 3/8” wide, 3/1/4” deep, and 4 ¾” tall. The bottom has incised marks 9 9, and below that are faint number 10178; it also appears to have an underglaze black hand-written mark of 61. From the marks on the bottom, I would say the piece is pre-1891, since there is no country of origin on the piece. The color is still wonderful on this piece and the glaze is still shiny. I find no evidence of crazing; there is a tiny hairline at the lip on the front (pictured). There are many underglaze sand marks, but that is to be expected, since Majolica wasn’t considered fine pottery when it was made.
What a great piece to add to your Majolica or pottery collection or just display on its own. Please contact us if you have any questions.
