The hamsa hand is an ancient symbol of peace, protection, happiness and health, dating back to the Phoenicians as a symbol of a Middle Eastern goddess. The hamsa hand later became symbolic in both Islam and Judaism, and today is a symbol that had been adopted by peace activists who support peaceful resolutions to ongoing world conflicts. For thousands of years, the hamsa hand has been worn as an amulet to bring peace and happiness to the wearer. Thus, the design on this 12 3/8” diameter tray goes back to ancient history. In addition to the center hand, there is a closely punched dotted pattern as a backdrop; around that is a scalloped pattern with a punched flower in each half circle. The lip of the tray is bordered in a stamped floral pattern, and the edge is crimped. There is a hanger on the back that either was added later or has been re-attached, since there is evidence of soldering. If you want to use this as a tray, the hanger does not prohibit it from lying flat. The tray shows age appropriate wear but has a deep, rich patina to it. It has an oval mark stamped on the back Fauzi Naas Tripoli.
