This wonderful old 20” x 16” chalkboard was used for many years, as its wear shows, but doesn’t that add to its charm?! According to our research this blackboard is from the late 1930s and was made from pulverized slate to make for a smooth writing surface. However the board was supposed to be “seasoned” first in order for it not to cloud. I think maybe this chalkboard wasn’t seasoned, since it has many cloudy spots. There are many scratches at the bottom by the chalk tray, where many little fingernails must have scratched the surface while picking up chalk. This board was made by the Richmond School Furniture Co. in Muncie, Indiana, as indicated by the partial paper label on the back. It’s rough condition doesn’t detract from the charm of this piece that lived in so many children’s lives.
This would make a wonderful addition to your primitive or school collection and would look great hanging in a kitchen or den. Please contact us if you have any questions.
