This interesting souvenir Australian kangaroo is from the estate of a retired, career navy chief warrant officer. It’s a simple piece, but really interesting. Hand engraved in the middle is: Hello from Down Under 1943-4. To the left of the message is small metal rendering of Australia attached with very small brads through the thin wood. He also has an engraved eye and mouth. Around the kangaroo’s neck is what was probably a collar, with a lot of adhesive tape on it; the backside depicts some leaves on the collar, but you can’t see any on the front. We were at first afraid that the tape was holding the head on at the neck, but it is very secure; so the tape/collar are strictly decorative. This 18” long piece is made of interesting wood; probably a wood native to Australia that isn’t as familiar to the rest of us. Even though the piece is only at 1/8” thick, the wood grain on one side is completely different from the grain on the other. The kangaroo is about 9 ½” tall. There is a hole at the top from which to hang it. Other than pretty brittle adhesive tape around the fellow’s neck, the red is in excellent condition.
