In the 1930s and ‘40s when people used to darn their clothes to make them last longer, sewing birds became a whimsical way to keep all of the sewing notions together to grab up and get to work. This cute homemade sewing caddy is a bird that holds scissors to form its beak, a thimble can rest on the peg on the tail, and thread is corralled by the dowels on the stand. I have a feeling there was once a pin cushion on the bird’s back; two small nails are still in place that probably held it between its wings. It would be easy the put a pin cushion back or the space could be used to hold a rolled up tape measure or other small sewing items. The yellow bird with green-blue wings is 7 ½” tall including the stand and 9 ½” from the front side of the stand to the tip of the tail. It is in very good used condition; there is an expected bit of paint loss on the bird and smudges on the bottom side of the stand, but the bird hasn’t lost his charm.
This would be a wonderful addition to your vintage bird or sewing collection or to use to organize small kitchen items. I think it would be cute just to decorate with! Please contact us if you have any questions.
