Just the old piece of wood is interesting, but with the hand painted ducks, it makes a wonderful item for a den or study. The 14” round wooden piece is made of five pieces of wood seamed together and routed out in a slight convex slope; then the center is carved out to make a flat surface where the ducks are painted. The wood shows wear marks and other blemishes, making it really interesting. The ducks are early paintings by Shirley Dorbandt Ponder, an accomplished and respected artist from the Dallas area. She was born in 1913 in Sweetwater, TX, but grew up and lived most of her life in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This piece was probably from the early 1950s when she and her husband Joe Ponder built a new home in the trendy growing heart of Dallas. Over the years, she entered and won at many area art shows. She died in 2005 in Dallas at age 91.
This would make a wonderful addition to a mancave, family room or study. Please contact us if you have any questions.
