The endearing look on this dog presenting a basket to its master melts your heart. Measuring 5 ½” long, 4 7/8” tall and 2 ¼” wide, it is hard to determine what he is made out of; when you tap on it, it sounds like either porcelain or ceramic, but the predominant brown color on him hasn’t been fired nor is there any glaze. There is a honey color under the peeling brown paint; so I don’t know if sometime many years ago someone painted him brown or if was always brown and it’s now peeling off. Whatever the answer is, it doesn’t take away from how sweet this puppy is! In his mouth he is holding a woven-wire basket with moss and a flower and soft pink and green ribbon streaming down the front. Someone has put cloth on his underside to keep him from scratching a table top, and if there are makers marks, they must be under the cloth, since no marks were found. Other than paint loss, there are no other issues with this precious pup. With the fact that the material is hard to identify and that the basket is actually made of wire and not straw or plastic, I would guess that this piece is pre-World War II.
