Whoever carved this wonderful piece truly caught the personality in the face of this Italian wine steward. This 9 7/8” tall figure is the keeper of the wine cellar with keys in hand, a bottle under his arm and a pitcher for serving. The details in this piece are outstanding: the pupils in his eyes, the cherubic smile, his curly hair, the wrinkles in his shirt and apron, and his round belly stretching his shirt a bit. Even with all of the detail, the surface is smooth and finely carved with a beautiful patina. This piece makes you smile just to look at. It is in excellent condition with a tiny loss of paint on the mouth of the wine bottle and one small place on the back of the stand. It isn’t marked on the bottom, but from research, we feel certain that this is Anri.
This carving came from the wealthy estate of an heir to the famous Texas W. T. Waggoner Ranch – the largest contiguous ranch under one fence in the United States, spanning six counties and comprising 525,000 acres. The ranch, founded in 1849, was used for farming, raising cattle, drilling oil, and breeding quarter horses. This is a chance to own a piece of history.
This would be a wonderful addition to your Anri collection, to give to a wine lover, or as a decorative piece on its own. It would make a great conversation piece, too. Please contact us if you have any questions.
