This precious 13” Baby Buttercup doll came out in 1931 and is marked H @ Co., indicating that she is a Horsman doll. Edward Imeson Horsman opened a toy shop in New York City in 1865 and sold imported dolls until 1909 when he began using a new formula to make composition dolls. Over the years many beloved dolls were made, and so many were just precious like this Baby Buttercup, which came in several sizes. This baby is still so sweet. Her sleep eyes still work; her round cheeks have a rosy tint, and her open mouth is still red, and the painted eyelashes accent her eyes. She is jointed at the shoulders and hips. For an almost 90-year-old doll she is in lovely condition. There is some crazing in various places on her body (pictured), and her tin eyes are a little bit cloudy, and there are some rubs from being loved all these years. She has all of her fingers and toes; her mohair eyelashes are short, but still there. Her cloth body shows that she came with a squeaker, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore. The dress she is wearing does not have a tag in it, and I don’t think it is original to the doll. However the drop waist style was very popular in the late 1920-early 1930 era; so it is probably from the period.
This doll is darling as she is, but someone who knows how to restore dolls could do a little work and she would look like she did in 1931.
This would be a precious addition to your doll collection. Please contact us if you have any questions.
