Holkham Studio Pottery was established in 1951 on the Holkham estate in Norfolk by Lady Elizabeth, wife of the 5th Earl of Leicester. Holkham Hall, home to the Earls of Leicester, is a Palladian style mansion built in the mid 1700s. The studio was set up in an old bowling hall built by the 2nd Earl of Leicester in 1867. Lady Elizabeth broke tradition by being the first major estate holder to set up a manufacturing business on the grounds of an aristocratic estate and had an on-site gift shop. They produced lamp bases, floral wares, commemorative items, and table and dinner ware. They also had an artist studio where pottery was handmade by different artisans. Holkham Pottery was incorporated in 1961 and ceased manufacturing in 2007.
This mid-century modern tea set was produced between 1951 and 1961, before Holkham Pottery incorporated. After 1961, marks on their wares bore the name Holkham Pottery, Ltd. This contemporary pattern is known as the Owl design, because when you turn the handle of a piece toward you, you can see the eyes of an owl looking back at you. Not only is the design sleek and reminiscent of the very popular looks of the 1950s, but it is easy to hold in your hands. Your fingers fit through the handle easily making the mug and tea pot easy to hold. The mark on the bottom of each piece says Holkham, England. The mold number in in the middle of the mark.
This set is glazed in brown with a very shiny finish. It consists of a tea pot with lid, 6 mugs and a sugar bowl. The teapot measures 8 ¾” from spout to handle, 5 ½” tall and aprox. 6” at its widest. The mugs are 3 5/8” tall; the sugar is 2 ¾” tall. The set is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks and no crazing that we could see. One mug has a small rough edge on the lip; it looks like a flea bite of glaze is missing. Another mug has an indentation on the lip, but it is from the manufacturing process.
This is priced as a set.
