Using fibers from the palmetto to make their products, the Palmetto Fibre Co. was founded in Frederick, Maryland in 1866. After expanding their line of wares and building a larger place to manufacture, in 1902, the company was renamed Ox Fibre Brush Company, because the palmetto fiber was the color of a Devon ox. Their well-received quality products were shipped across the US and into Canada. In fact, their success became their demise. They couldn’t find enough labor to meet the demand for their goods, and the company closed in 1967.
This 8” long brush seems to be a good example of the quality of Ox Co. The handle is completely wrapped in wire, making it very sturdy and easy to hold in your hand. I know this brush is at bare minimum over 50 years old, and it still is intact with all its bristles. This could have been used to brush ashes from an old fireplace, crumbs off the table, or maybe brush lint from clothes. Whatever it was used for, it's an interesting piece of history.
