Before sturdy shipping tape and twist ties came into existence, string was used daily in every household; so string holders became a decorative way to have string readily available to wrap packages, keep butcher paper securely tied, and keep sacks closed tightly. This sweet little Dutch girl holds a good-sized roll of string in the back of her head, and the string is accessed by pulling it through her pursed lips. There is a looped wire that has been embedded into the back so that the holder can be hung on the wall. The plaster or chalk is in very good condition, but there is loss of paint in several places on her face; there is also a rub mark on her chin. She has matte paint on her face and cap, which really warms up her features. The holder is 6 3/8” tall, 6 7/8” at the widest, and 3 3/8” deep and is pretty substantial, weighing about 1 ½ lbs. The opening in back for the string is approximately 4 1/2" tall, 2 3/4" wide and 1 3/4" deep.
