This wonderful, unusual document box is so different from most of the ones you find. It stands upright, more like a rack, but has two doors and a lid to completely close it up so that the papers don’t look cluttered. It is handmade with hand carved decoration on the two doors and the bottom front piece. The box stands 8 ½” tall with the lid closed; is 10” wide, and 4 ½” deep at the bottom before it tapers up at the top, and appears to be made from several different kinds of wood. It was probably made on site by the gentleman farmer’s hired help, since it isn’t precision, but certainly tastefully made with some skill. From the wear and other tell-tale signs, I believe it is probably from the mid-1800s. Thus box was used a lot; the bottom trim piece is worn thin from picking it up and sliding it back it its shelf.
This would be a wonderful addition to your mid-century collection, to brighten you kitchen, or to use every day. Please contact us if you have any questions.
