From the estate of the artist, Joan Engelman, was local to my area and was very well-known and well-respected regionally. Painted on a wrapped 10” x 7 ¾” canvas, the oil depicts two goats, which may have been prize goats, since one has what looks like an ear tag. Done with an orange and brown background, the goats really pop in this piece. They have such sweet faces. The sides of the canvas are painted a dark brown, so it could be hung just as it is, without a frame. It is not signed, but it is Joan’s work. Joan seemed to love farm animals, because she used them as subjects in many of her paintings. Chickens were her favorite; the door to her art studio was decorated with a large chicken that she painted on it, and she graced many friends with one of her chickens. We have some of her watercolor chickens listed for sale in our shop.
