In the early 1960s, Enid Collins made a place in fashion for herself with her hand decorated wooden box purses. Her trademark, Collins of Texas with the hand-drawn horse, was popular with all the young fashion-conscious ladies. This purse, entitled Money Tree II, copyrighted in 1964, was offered at upscale stores like Neiman Marcus. If you carried one of these handbags, you “had arrived;” they were truly status symbols. The wood box purse measures 12” wide, 6 ½” tall and 2 7/8” deep, not including the handle or clasp; it is hand-painted with the black outline of a bird, tree, and sun and then bejeweled with gold braid, pressed “coins” and rhinestones. The purse closure is made of a black leather strap that fastens over a brass turn-knob. The handle is a shiny vinyl or plastic with brass fasteners. The inside of the purse is spotless; it doesn’t look like anything was ever carried in it. On the inside lid it states: The Original Box Bag by Collins of Texas, hand-decorated for You! copyright 1964 enid Collins. The purse does have a few slight dings and one small nick on the back left bottom. For being 50+ years old, it is in remarkable condition.
