The Embossing Company in Albany, New York was established in 1870 by famous plastics inventor John Wesley Hyatt and his two brothers Charles and Isaiah. Hyatt was famous for inventing celluloid billiard balls which replaced the ivory ball common in the 1800s. “Toys that Teach” was their motto. Checkers, dominoes, architectural and ABC blocks made up the majority of the company’s toy and game production. October 1915, Joseph H. Ramsey applied for a patent for whiteface dominoes and was granted the patent June 6, 1916. As stated in the application “its chief object is to provide what is called a white face domino, pieces of that description being more easily distinguished on the table, and being generally considered to be more attractive in appearance. Another object is to provide a domino with an inlaid face which shall have the appearance of bone or ivory inlay, but which can be manufactured `at low cost.” The company was sold in 1955 to Halsam, and the Albany, New York, building was sold.
This set of 28 whiteface wood dominoes is in the original box and still contains the dustcover and instructions for playing dominoes and many other games. The back of each domino is embossed with an eagle. The box has some condition issues but is still intact and has the snap to close the box. The box is 7 ¾” x 4 ½” x 1 ¼”. There are two dominoes (pictured) that have some stains on the white and one domino that has a small chip on the corner (pictured). Considering the age of the set of dominoes, the overall condition is very good.
