Although she was born in New England, pastel artist Amy Gormley Winton has focused her art and career in the mid-United States, drawing countryside in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. She has been a long-time member of the prestigious Pastel Society of America, and she has stated that she likes “immediacy of the pastel pigment on paper.” Collectors of her drawings and paintings are worldwide; her works hang in collections in Austria, Russia, Mexico, Canada, Texas, and on both coasts of the US. She currently works from and exhibits her art at Winton Studio/Gallery in Littleton, Colorado.
This wonderful, textured pastel drawing entitled “Sunrise from Below”, depicts a canyon area, most likely Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, since she was drawing and exhibiting in Amarillo when this piece was done. She shows rich colors of the sun coming up hitting the crevices and formations in the canyon, using greens, rusts, browns, blue, orange , beiges and whites. The pastel itself measures 7” x 4 1/8”, but the detail is wonderful, and even through the glass you can see the texture she has built with the pastels. Framed, the piece measures 15” x 12” x 1/1/2”; it is matted in a soft beige with peach undertones and has a gold liner around the drawing. The art is recessed into the deep frame.
