Before it closed in 2012, Van Briggle Pottery was the longest continuously operating pottery company in the US. Artus and Anne Van Briggle set up their own pottery company in Colorado Springs, CO in 1901, after Artus had spent a number of years as a designer for Rookwood. Artus was a recognized leader in the Art Nouveau art pottery movement of the late 1800 and early 1900 period. Even though he died a few years later, Anne continued operations after his death. The company later changed hands but managed to weather bad economic times during the Depression and World War II and flourished again in the 1950s.

This wonderful 4 ¼” onion bulb vase, shape # 645, is in the popular turquoise color with a slightly darker shade applied to the “bulbs” at the bottom. The tendril sprouting up out of the bulb makes a graceful swan neck curve all the way to the lip of the vase. This piece is very beautiful in its simplicity. It is marked with the conjoined “A” logo, Van Briggle, Colo Spgs. The is a darker turquoise mark on the bottom, but I don’t know if that is an artist’s mark or a glazing mark. The bottom is rough and shows wear, but the piece is in wonderful condition with not chips or cracks.

This would be a wonderful addition to your art pottery collection or as a stand-alone piece. Please contact us if you have any questions. We will always consider any reasonable offer for our pieces.
