From the estate of a retired World War II officer, these two gin bari or embossed foil vases are enameled in a deep red (akasuke) transparent enamel with hand painted roses or peonies. But there is even more…on the back under the enameling, each has bamboo embossed in the foil, but interestingly, only one has birds in the bamboo. It was very hard to photograph the bamboo and birds, which is part of the intrigue of the pieces; you have to really study them to find the “hidden treasure.” I don’t know why the artist decided to only put birds on one, but if you study the photos, you will see them looking at each other. The vases stand 7 ¼” tall and are 3 ¾” at their widest. They have silvered rims and bases. Each is marked with a hand-applied mark CPO. The CPO mark isn’t like most found right after WWII, but from research, it must still reflect that these are done through the Central Purchasing Office of the US military, who worked with Japanese craftsmen to help allocate scarce metal sources to make their pieces. This shortly preceded the Occupied Japan era, as part of the Marshall plan to get the Japanese economy back on its feet. The enameling is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The silver has tarnished and has a few wear marks on it from sliding on shelves.
