Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1917, Juan Ferrandiz was an illustrator, writer, poet, and sculptor, receiving his education at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona. Children, animals, and peace where the focus of his many illustrated writings. With the inspiration from his many illustrations of children and animals, in 1969, he began to design carved wooden pieces through ANRI, and became beloved by thousands who saw his pieces.

Ferrandiz designed an entire nativity set with childlike figures in two sizes: with 6” figures and 3” figures. The pieces that we have to offer are from the 6” set, all measured from the height of the standing figures. This piece is part of a set that came from the estate of a career Air Force officer and his family who traveled the world. I feel sure they purchased this set while in Italy probably around the time that Ferrandiz first started working with ANRI in the late 1960s. This particular piece was given the name "Reverence" by Ferrandiz; the faces of the two reverently look up, perhaps in thanksgiving, to the baby Jesus being born. The carving is 4 1/8” long and 5 1/4” tall and has been painted in soft reds and blues with brown hairs. The boy has a horn over his shoulder and hat at his back and leans on a staff; the girls has a bag at her waist and has a scarf on her head. This piece bears Ferrandiz’s signature in the back of the stand and has Anri Italy impressed into the wood on the bottom. The piece is hand carved to a smooth finish and shaded, and Ferrandiz, with his love of children and animals, gave endearing looks to their little faces. These figures are in excellent condition.
