In the 1970s, artist Xavier Roberts began making soft sculpture dolls from the old needle molding technique to create the dolls’ features. He displayed his dolls at fairs and craft shows, not offering them for sale but for “adoption” instead. He patented these dolls in 1978 and called them The Little People. In 1982, his company, Original Appalachian Artworks, licensed a smaller version of these dolls to the toy manufacturer Coleco, changing the name of these smaller dolls to Cabbage Patch Kids. From the minute these dolls hit the stores, they were a hit, especially at Christmas time where parents rushed to get the unique doll that their child wanted. Coleco only manufactured these dolls until 1989, when they filed for bankruptcy. Hasbro, Mattel, Toys R Us, and several other companies made these dolls after 1989.
This 1985 doll, Mary Karna, is a curly blond girl with blue eyes. She has a bow in her hair and is dressed in a red dress with white shoes; she has white tights on and her original diaper. She has never been removed from her box and still has the original bands holding her in the box. Her arm tag is still on and her birth certificate is still in the box. She is in excellent condition other than a bit of dust that has covered the box over the last 30+ years. The box is in very good condition with a few bent places where the tab goes into the box.
