From my personal collection - Majolica is such happy pottery! The colors are always cheery and the artisans were apparently not afraid to use non-traditional colors together. This 11” (handle to handle) sandwich or tidbit plate is not exception. It is decorated with a light blue-gray raised relief basket weave background on which raised red and yellow fruit has been placed. The leaves are a blue-green shade. The piece is marked on the back with an under-glaze Made in Germany and faint symbol that looks like a small zero or O. Incised are the numbers 2882 and 7 on its side above. The marks indicate that this piece is from the early 1900s. It is rare to find majolica in perfect condition, but piece still has an excellent glaze on it with very bright colors. There are no cracks or crazing, but there is one small, very old chip on the rim; that just adds to the character and testifies to age of the piece.
This would be a cheerful addition to your pottery or majolica collection. Please contact us if you have any questions.
