The touchtone or push button phone was introduced to the United States in 1963. With the new technology of the touchtone phone, each button emitted a specialized tone instead of a pulse that was heard in the old rotary dial phone. With the rotary dialing system, long distance calls had to be made with the assistance of on operator, but with the “cutting edge” technology of the touchtone, you could directly dial anyone in the world that had the same technology. This was quite the innovation in the ’60-70s era. This 1 ¼” wide silver tone alligator clip tie bar, made by Rugin (marked on the back), could have been a promotional piece to have telephone company employees wear or to hand out to telephone customers to get them to switch to the touchtone system, which did cost more per month than the old rotary service.

The entire clip is in a silver tone color, which is still very shiny and new looking – in fact it was hard to photograph because of all the reflection. The face of the phone has black enamel on it where the push buttons are. It’s a neat piece of novelty jewelry and telephone history.

This would be an interesting addition to your vintage men's jewelry or history of technology collection. Please contact us if you have any questions.
