Own a piece of history, a wonderful advertising piece and a conversation starter all in one leather bound book. Apparently, in the 1960s when Sears was a major retailer, they gave leather bound editions of their mail order catalogs to the governors of the states where their shipping centers were located. Dallas was the location of one of those centers. On the inside, this catalog looks just like any that we would have received in the mail, but on the outside, it is bound in a medium brown, thick leather and has gold embossed lettering: Spring and Summer, 1967. Sears, and on the lower right corner: John B. Connally, Governor of Texas. The edges of the pages are gilt.
As many of you remember, Texas governor John Connally was sitting in the front seat of President John Kennedy’s limousine as the Kennedys toured Fort Worth and Dallas on November 22, 1963. Gov. Connally was seriously wounded at the same time that President Kennedy was fatally shot in Dallas. Before Connally was governor of Texas, he served as Kennedy’s Secretary of the Navy during Kennedy’s first year as President; so the two men were colleagues as well as political partners.
Considering the catalog is over 50 years old, it is in marvelous condition. It is a little musty smelling, as books are many times. The leather has a few slight smudges on it. The edges of the pages are still bright gold and the embossing is still clear and bright. The book is quite heavy, weighing almost 7 lbs. It measures 11 3/8” x 8 ¼”. I have had the catalog in my possession in a smoke-free home for almost 20 years, and it came from a smoke-free Texas estate.
This would make a one-of-a-kind addition to your collection. It's fun to see what products Sears used to sell and how inexpensive they were compared to today's prices. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Remember, even if you do not have a PayPal account, you may pay with your credit card through PayPal. If paying by personal check, the item will be shipped as soon as the check clears the bank. However, on international sales, please pay via PayPal.
We estimate shipping/handling costs on the high side and will gladly refund the overage to you if you pay by PayPal. I’m hoping to send it via media mail, which should save some money, but that isn’t an option on Ruby Lane; so a refund may be issued.
