I’m not one hundred percent certain that this is a chop seal, but after extensive research that is the only conclusion I can come up with for this unusual piece. Measuring 3” tall, it’s the right height for a name seal. When first acquired, I thought is was just a colorful enameled little Asian figure, but the three holes in the brass bottom really threw me. It could have once been a finial on a larger Asian piece, but if it has just sat in the same place for decades, why would the bottom show wear. I really think the bottom holes were to hold a seal in place and that seals could be interchanged. Whatever the little figure is, it is quite old. The enameling is wonderful with the bright green, pink and salmon colors. Even if you don’t collect chop seals, this cheery figure would be a wonderful addition as a decorative piece. There is very minor age-related wear around the bottom.
This would be a charming addition to your Asian or writing/desk collection or as a decorative figurine. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please look at the photos closely, they are part of the description of the item. We will always consider any reasonable offer for our pieces.
