California native, Thomas Kinkade, made a name for himself through his pastoral and idyllic paintings and mass marketed his works as printed reproductions and other licensed products through the Thomas Kinkade Company. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After college, he and a friend travel across the US, ending up in New York City where they landed a contract to produce a sketching handbook. In two years they produced The Artist’s Guide to Sketching, which was on of Guptill Publications’ best-sellers that year. The success of the book led the two to Ralph Bakshi Studios where the created background art of the 1983 animated film Fire and Ice. During this time, Kinkade began to explore the depiction of light, and after the film he earned his living as a painter, selling his originals in galleries throughout California. He died in 2012.
As part of the marketing of his art, Kinkade began a business relationship with Teleflora, and for at least 25 years, Teleflora would use one of his cottage designs each year to incorporate into their Christmas floral arrangements. This winter scene entitled Memories of Christmas, dated 2005, depicts a cozy cottage with a sparkly snow-covered roof. In the front yard of the cottage there is a decorated tree with multi-colored lights with a star on top. There is a Christmas wreath with a bright red bow on the front door. There are evergreen trees with snow around the house. The candle holder is in the back of the house on what would be the patio enclosed by a low rock fence. The clear glass cover for the candle is decorated with Santa and his sleigh pulled by two reindeer. The Christmas scene measures 5” wide, about 5 1/4” deep, about 9” to the top of the glass and 4” to the top of the tallest tree. The scene is made of resin. It is in excellent vintage condition. On the underside it reads: Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light, Memories of Christmas 2005, 2005 Thomas Kinkade, The Thomas Kinkade Company, Morgan Hill, CA, Teleflora Gift, Made in China.
