California native, Thomas Kinkade, made a name for himself through his pastoral and idyllic paintings and mass marketed his works as printed reproductions and other licensed products through the Thomas Kinkade Company. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After college, he and a friend travel across the US, ending up in New York City where they landed a contract to produce a sketching handbook. In two years they produced The Artist’s Guide to Sketching, which was on of Guptill Publications’ best-sellers that year. The success of the book led the two to Ralph Bakshi Studios where the created background art of the 1983 animated film Fire and Ice. During this time, Kinkade began to explore the depiction of light, and after the film he earned his living as a painter, selling his originals in galleries throughout California. He died in 2012.
As part of the marketing of his art, Kinkade began a business relationship with Teleflora, and for at least 25 years, Teleflora would use one of his cottage designs each year to incorporate into their Christmas floral arrangements. This winter scene entitled Stillwater Cottage, dated 2005, depicts Mama kissing Santa Claus in front a big picture window. When it is turned on (when two AA batteries are put in), you can see a crackling fire behind them and presents are under a tree in the corner. Lights also shine from the upstairs window and through the front door and side windows. There are evergreen trees with snow, one of which is decorated with Christmas balls and a star on top. There is a snowman by the front door, and across the cobblestone front walk is a lamp post with a red ribbon and garland. The roofline of the house is decorated with multi-colored lights. The Christmas scene measures 6 3/4” wide, about 5 1/4” deep and about 6 ¾” to the top of the tallest tree. The scene is made of resin and covered with sparkly “snow.” It is in excellent vintage condition. On the underside it reads: Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light, Thomas Kinkade Presents Stillwater Cottage, 2005, Thomas Kinkade, Teleflora Gift, Made in China.
This would be a wonderful addition to your Christmas collection or to display every day. Please contact us if you have any questions.
