There is nothing prettier than opalescent cranberry glass, and with this Gone with the Wind lamp, you get a double dose! Both the bottom and top of the lamp are fashioned out of gorgeous bulbous hobnail globes with ruffled tops. I have no proof, other than lots of years in the antique business, but I believe someone had this lamp custom made in the 1940s or 50s. On the underneath side of the cast metal lamp base it is marked SS NY 1259. From research, which was limited, that is probably the mark from the foundry that made the base and perhaps the other fittings. The best I can tell, the mark is from the 1920-1950 era. The lamp is 25 ½” from the base to the top of the clear glass chimney; 23 ½” to the top of the 8 ½” diameter shade. I don’t know what kind of metal the base is made of, but it has a brass look to it and is cast into a nice leaf pattern.
The cranberry globes are beautiful and in wonderful condition ;they look like Fenton, but there is no paper tag. The one that serves as the shade has small flea bites on the inside of the bottom rim, I suppose from placing and removing the shade from the lamp; they are not detectable until the shade is off and you feel inside the bottom. The flea bites seem to almost be in a pattern to “roughen up’ the rim to hold better onto the base, but that is merely conjecture. Other than that, the cranberry glass is stunning. The bottom globe has a small bulb that lights up, feeding from the base of the lamp, and, of course, there is a larger bulb at the top. When we took the photos we had the shade bracket on upside down; we have turned it the correct way and it fits perfectly.
This would be a wonderful addition to any room in your house. Please contact us if you have any questions.
