This chafing dish, dating from the 1890s, is beautiful just to look at, but it was made to be serviceable also. It is equipped with a double-handled warming tray that sits just above the burner, and then the enameled pan sits on top of the tray so that the bottom of the pan doesn’t burn. I believe there is enough room in the warming tray to add a bit of water to further cushion the pan from scorching above the flame. The enameled pan has a copper rim around its lip. The repousse lid is stunning with its beautiful scalloped pattern and brass beading as a trim. It is topped with a wooden finial on the top so as not to burn your fingers when lifting the lid. The handles on the warming tray and pan are also made of wood. All of this sits on the three-legged copper stand, which also supports the burner. The bottom of the burner is marked with two patent dates – 1893 and 1895; it also bears the Sternau Co. name and New York, plus the trademark. The bottom of the warming tray states: Guaranteed solid copper, Trademark, S. Sternau & Co., New York. This stunning copper piece is in excellent antique condition, with just a tiny bit of oxidation on the lid and chipped enamel on the bottom of the pan. This is a very substantial chafing dish, weighing 5 lbs. The serving pan to the chafing dish is 9 1/2" in diameter and 2 1/2" deep. The overall dimensions of the chafing dish are 11 1/2" tall to the top of the finial/knob of the lid; 7 1/2" tall without the lid on. The serving pan is 17" long counting the wooden handle.
This would be a wonderful addition to your copper collection or to use at all of your dinner parties. Please contact us if you have any questions.
