Born in 1943, Pauline Solven was a pioneer in the studio art glass movement, being one of the early artists/designers who also blew her own glass. Earlier, large studios and glass manufacturers would have artists design the glass pieces, but others would actually blow it into the design. In 1969, she co-founded The Glasshouse, Covent Garden, in London, and a few years later, established her own studio Ravenshill.
This 3 3/8” tall three sided vase is designed with a white oval with a red center surrounded by circles of muted grays, greens and browns on each side. The background is a dark brown or black. The pontil mark still shows on the bottom, where she has signed and dated it, and marked it with RH 308, indicating that it was made in her Ravenshill studio. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or flea bites.
This piece is one of many in an art glass collection that we recently acquired.
