This 6” tall vase is made of layers of iridescent rust and various blues encased in a clear outer glass; the blues range from a dark navy to light blue-green. The vase is asymmetrical with long soft indentations down the exterior. When light shines through it and looking inside of the vase, you can see the many colors of glass he used to create the colors seen from the outside. Seide is able to blow his vases in such a way that when looking at the layers of colored glass, it gains a 3-D quality. The photos do not do this piece justice.
Seide has served as the vice president and design director of Milropa Studios in New York City and is also an instructor. Born in 1949, he received his degree from the University of Wisconsin/Madison in 1974. He has exhibited at numerous galleries worldwide. In 1995 he received an architectural commission for the Swarovski World of Crystal in Wattens, Austria. He has permanent collections in Corning Museum of Glass, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Switzerland, and the National Museum of Modern art in Japan. Seide lost his entire New York studio and inventory in the 9/11 attacks and has been working since then to rebuild.
