Richard Satava was introduced to glassblowing in 1969 while at Ocean High School in Pacifica, CA. He went on and studied art and glassblowing at the College of San Mateo and California State University, Chico, working as a technician for the university’s glass shop. In 1977 he established his own studio in Chico. The art glass that he creates is based on nature, and he is known worldwide for his floral series (including irises, poppies, lilies, and rock roses) and Moon Jellyfish series. He designs and created each piece as one-of-a-kind, all from glass that he has formulated and made himself. In all of his works, Satava achieves remarkable detail and dimension. While a piece is on his blowpipe, his torch melts colored rods of glass to create precise images on the surface or suspended within layers of clear glass. Each piece is blown and shaped without the use of molds, then signed, dated and numbered.
This gorgeous 8 ½” tall vase from his floral series depicts rusty-red irises on a light blue transparent background with black and blue shoots all coming up from yellow and rusty earth. The mouth measures 2 ½” in diameter and the widest part of the vase is 5 ½”. The vase is signed R Satava, numbered 1015, and dated ’93. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or flea bites.
