Born in 1944, Karlin Rushbrooke studied at the Stourbridge College of Art in England finishing in 1968. His first studio was in Sussex, but two or three years later he moved to Herefordshire. Rushbrooke was the first glass artist in England to set up his own studio after the introduction of small furnaces in the USA, thus becoming a pioneer in the studio art glass movement where artists designed and blew their own glass pieces. He also spent half of his career as a builder and was able to build his own equipment.
Rushbrooke’s art glass is known for its color and movement. His early pieces have lots of swirls and grid patterns amongst muted colors. This 3 3/4” tall paperweight is no exception. The paperweight has a pale translucent grayish background color with swirls of orange, white and black. Even though it is a rounded shape, the weight has four distinct sides through which there are holes that go through to the other side. It is signed and dated on the bottom Jan 1977, and is marked A69. This piece would have been done after his move to the Herefordshire studio, using his own furnaces. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. There are bubbles in the vase, but that is from the working of the glass.
This piece is one of many in an art glass collection that we recently acquired. What a great find to add to your art glass collection or just as an accent piece on your shelf. The tags on the bottom are for our inventory and identification purposes. Please contact us if you have any questions.
