In 1971, while a glass student at the Royal College of Art, Annette Meech started working weekends at The Glasshouse in London. After graduation the next year, she had the opportunity continue working glass at The Glasshouse. At the time there were very few studios like The Glasshouse, where glass artists could design and then create their own glass pieces. Prior to the studio glass movement, artists would design their work, but a glassblower would actually make the piece from the design. Meech worked at The Glasshouse for 26 years, until in 1999 she and Christopher Williams set up a studio in Sivignoni in France. Meech has stated that although her new studio is smaller than The Glasshouse, “the spirit of The Glasshouse lives on.” She has exhibited her pieces all over the world and has works in permanent collections at numerous museums and galleries in England and throughout Europe. She has pieces in permanent collections at the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY and in the New Orleans Museum of Art.
This gorgeous transparent vase with its ribbons of light and dark green and blue and dots of greens and blues stands 4” tall with a diameter of 2 1/2”. It is signed and dated on the bottom: Annette Meech 1978. I tried to catch this in the photograph, but my camera didn’t cooperate. It is in excellent condition with just a few wear marks on the bottom from having been on a shelf for 40 or so years.
We do have two more “companion” pieces of hers for sale that would make a lovely display. They are pictured in the last photo.
This piece is one of many in an art glass collection that we recently acquired. What a great find to add to your art glass collection or just as an accent piece on your shelf. The tags on the bottom are for our inventory and identification purposes. Please contact us if you have any questions.
