As a young man in Nancy, France, Emile Galle studied, among other things, horticulture, and this love of plants reflects in many of his pieces of cameo glass. This wonderful 5 ½” red cameo vase is another beautiful example of his skill at glass making and love of plants. A lighter red is cased by a dark red, from which flowers and leaves are carved. The motif gracefully encircles the vase, making you wonder how such delicate work can be done on glass. In the 1870s in his father’s factory, Galle worked on clear glass on which he enameled plant life and later developed and perfected the cameo glass art for which he is known. Galle worked his craft and at one time employed as many as 300 until his death in 1904; his factory continued in operation until 1936. The vase is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or flea bites; there is evidence of wear from having been on display for 100 years.
This piece is one of many in a cameo glass collection that we recently acquired.
