As a young man, Emile Galle studied, among other things, horticulture, and this love of nature reflects in many of his pieces of cameo glass. This stunning 14 ¼” tall lamp base is another beautiful example of his skill at glass making and love of the outdoors. This gorgeous mountain scene is cut from several layers of glass one of which is a teal/blue as evidenced on the bottom on the lamp. The blue helps to make the distant mountains appear misty. A nearby tree graces the front of the ovoid lamp with mountains in the background; the motif gracefully encircles the lamp, with trees and mountains at a distance. In the 1870s in his father’s factory, Galle worked on clear glass on which he enameled plant life and later developed and perfected the cameo glass art for which he is known. Galle worked his craft and at one time employed as many as 300 until his death in 1904; his factory continued in operation until 1936, but the quality lessened after his death. This lamp base had to have been made under his care, because the work is delicate and the scene is like a painting instead of cuts into layers of colored opaque glass. The lamp base is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or flea bites; there is a rub mark on the back, but that is to be expected of a piece that has been on display for 100+ years.
There has been recent rewiring of the lamp and a new socket. The new owner may want to add a different housing on the lamp to accommodate a harp to hold a lamp shade.
This piece is one of many in a cameo glass collection that we recently acquired.
