This is a very special and rare antique fan , eventail. One feature which contributes to the rareness is that this fan has two front guards. I believe it was designed by Georges Bastard, The double silk fan leaf is of palmetto shape and heavily embroidered with "pave" set pearlized sequins which all reflect amazing color. The painted design in a chevron pattern in blues/greens and gold. The upper edge is decorated with gold metallic thread, couched in a deep zigzag motif. The reverse bears the maker's mark of Duvelleroy Paris. Condition is exceptional, without any loose threads, all are tied or knotted. There appears to be no missing sequins. Colors are strong and are 'not' enhanced in the photos.
The fan sticks and guards of blue/mauve mother-of-pearl, pierced, and gilded with foliage-like patterns, the guards similarly decorated, the outline being like a feather. Please note the graceful outward curve of the guards sticks, unlike some examples which I have seen that perhaps there had been damage on the ends and adjustments made at some point. This fan is exactly as designed and is perfect. The silk gauze backing has deteriorated which is to be expected for a delicate item over 100 years old.
