Here we have a lovely, rare, old box that is so hard to find; it has survived the ages regardless of the fact that it's made of primarily cardboard and paper. When I first saw it, I though, 'oh, it's Georgian, look at that picture', but after examining it I'm convinced it's early Victorian. The top image is a hand tinted lithograph of children playing on a wagon surrounded by forestry; very sweet.
The dimensions of the box indicate that it would have likely been for a dolls layette set or something like that; it measures 17" x 9 3/4" x 2 1/2". The inside has a fabulous rushed silk with cording and an foil image of a knight in armor. I would think this is the company's logo who made it but there is no name on it anywhere and I could not find any information on it.
The box is in played with, antique condition, the edges and sides all around show wear and the hardware shows it's age, there are some scratches to the cover and the lining inside shows age. The bottom lining is a replacement but it works well enough and displays little dolls or layette sets nicely. The box's back has an inventory or other number that is typical of Georgian and Victorian times.
Origin is unknown, I suspect it is Germany and I would date it late 1800s.
* The dolls are not included, I just had space there to display it and sometimes I like to fill my boxes with doll clothing inside. My dolls like to play!
