A gorgeous Art Deco necklace in excellent condition made of several faceted crystal beads, larger crystal beads separated by roundels to be displayed on either side when being worn. This old necklace measures about 23" on either side, so a total length of 46" (I'm 5'7" and on me it hangs to my belly button).
Unusual for this type of long necklace is the original Deco paste clasp making it easy to double or triple if desired. This type of jewelry was very popular during the 1930-1950s and we still find much of it today. What is unusual about this necklace, besides it having the clasp which would normally be unnecessary for a necklace of this length, is the condition is fabulous! I cannot tell that it was ever worn. It is still on the original string and the paste are all still white. The quality of the crystals are also very, very nice.
I do not know if the crystals are natural or man made; I suspect they are man made. Based on the quality and the craftsmanship, I suspect it is French in origin and the clasp dates it to the 1930s-1940s era but they did continue to make this type of jewelry through to the 1950s and it is still be copied and produced today (but much the materials used for the newer pieces look and feel different).
