I have had this beautiful antique treasure in my personal collection of Georgian jewelry for decades BUT I never, ever wear it or even look at, soooo into my shop it goes! For the mourning or Georgian jewel collector, I think it is quite a treat. Let me describe the scene: The miniature sepia painting is executed beautifully, she has the most gorgeous profile, kneeling down under a tree made of human hair snippets on a grass of the same material she is looking upwards holding a chalice, the word GRATITUDE in painted cartouche by her knee.
The miniature is set under an oval beveled rock crystal and set in I believe 18kt gold, it is unmarked and I purchased it so many decades ago, I do not remember, but I'm pretty positive it was 18kt, which is pretty standard for the era. There is pretty etching on the sides of the gold band. The miniature is surrounded by tiny pearls which represented tears.
The reverse is inscribed as a friendship ring and dated 1787. The crystal is beautiful without any scratches but show very minimal wear as expected from any genuine antique. With much of the mourning jewelry of this era and before they would just wrap them up and put them in a drawer and occasionally look at them in remembrance; often they did not wear the rings, but more the slides or pendants. At least that is what I usually find.
The gold show a bit of tarnish on the back that can clean up better and there is evidence on the band of a sizing but it was probably done with the ring was made, although I can't be sure. There are no flaws, it is in excellent condition. I paid a small fortune for the ring but I absolutely loved it and I find it's harder to find the paintings on these early miniatures with really well executed features. Likely English in origin, circa 1700s as per inscribed on the reverse.
