There is an usual lid on this hinged alabaster box that is square to match the base but it is not flat on the top, it has a slight pyramid and then like a square flat in the middle. Made before the turn of the last century, this lovely treasure has a beautiful detailed brass hinge.
The box is a nice larger size and measures about 5" x 3 1/2" and 14" around. There is minimal wear as expected from any genuine antique and could perhaps use a polish if desired, but it is in good antique condition without any chips or cracks or repairs that I could find. There are natural 'veins' that run through it, but I've cleaned it and it holds liquid, so these are not cracks and part of the natural stone. There is a small bruise to the alabaster corner (see in photo #8; please enlarge photos for details). I cannot get the little clasp to clip into the tiny nub but it opens and closes without issue and sits properly on the hinge.
Likely Italian in origin and part of the "Grand Tour" mementos the wealthy tourists of the 19th century liked to collect during their travels, so mid to late 1800s. You see it displayed with some other alabaster antiques that may or may not be available in my shop at the time of this listing.
