A lovely old treasure sent to me from France, it is a Napoleon III small missal book or sometimes referred to as a Book of Common Prayer or the Missals of Mary, it is a Devotional book that likely belonged to a young female years ago (mid-1800s).
It is covered in a deep purple velvet with French brass ormolu decorations on the spine and corners painted in cold enamel. It measures 5" x 3 1/2" x 1". Once opened, the book does not seem to have been read very much as the pages are not loose at all but as you see the velvet is a bit worn and on the edges split on the velvet covering; it could be glued down again but I chose to leave it. Also the pages show little foxing, pretty typical for the age.
Makes for a lovely display as you see in the last photo and the enameling on the ormolu metal is an additional luxury not often found. French in origin, I could not find a date inside the book but I would say it is circa 1840-1860.
