A lovely subject of a lady pointing to Grecian building in the distance as she is walking and conversing with a little cherub who is reading an open book as they walk and talk. A popular theme sometimes found in the Georgian era known as "Wisdom". All hand painted watercolor on paper, the painting is in good antique condition, the colors still very bright and colorful. I do believe the frame is original to it, but has been repaired in four places with the original back replaced and just taped down. I have not removed any of it but just inspected the painting with my 10x loop and confirmed it is not a print. Unsigned (although it might be signed on the reverse of the paper inside, I don't know).
Measures 14 " x 11 1/2" to include the frame, the painting itself is 11 1/2" x 9". The dark you may see across the mid-section is the reflection of my camera from the glass. I did find one small light brown spot on the lady's garment (you may be able to see it in the photos) that measures about 1/2" (very hard to see).
We find this type of work often on silk embroideries but not so for paintings, I think it would look lovely along side silk embroideries and prints of the era. I have it currently displayed with miniatures of the era and antique French silks lithos and it works marvelously. The building in the background may be a memorial, but I feel this would be considered a sentimental painting and not a mourning piece, although I think it could work along side mourning paintings of the period nicely. It is likely English or French in origin, circa 1780-1790. Due to the issues with the frame, I have reduced the price considerably.
