Infant mortality was common in the late Georgian and early Victorian era, many times the causes death was unknown. The life of the child was sometimes commemorated in paintings of them in clouds representing heaven. These sentimental paintings are not easily found and I love them, so I have collected them over the years when I could find them and afford them.
This one is a miniature painting of a little girl on porcelain in a gold frame with an open c-clasp on the reverse. The condition is used, there shows some repairs to the frame with a silver metal and the painting has scratches, but her portraiture was so charming, I could not resist!
She is a nice smaller size that I think works well when displayed on a doll (see last photo). I would say she is English in origin, as that is where the painting came from, and circa mid-1800s.
