I call this one of my 'from the vault' jewels because I've had it for decades but never wear it (and I only wore it once) and literally it's been in the safe for so long, I thought perhaps someone else might love it too and maybe more than I used to! It's a very unusual piece that I never thought I would part with it.

The painting shows a lady (or a ghost?) before a tomb but the set piece inside sort of looks like a crystal ball as well. It is a half pearl set with a gold wire underneath on a mother of pearl stand. The imagery is sort of haunting as the gowned and shrouded figure holds her hands over the ball as if asking or expecting something from it. Behind it are sepia painted trees but there maybe clips of hair as well which was pretty typical of the era.

It measures about 1 1/2" x 1" x 2/8" approximately. The painting is set under a thick crystal set in gold with blue enamel around the edges, surrounded by hand cut white paste set in gold, I believe it was sold to me as 18 kt but I don't remember and I haven't tested it, so it may be a higher or lower karat.

The back shows a few minor dents which is common for higher quality gold, the early c-clasp and t-hinge all original in fine working order and substantial. There is some minimal wear if inspected with a loop and one of the paste to the left side 7 stones down from top has darkened quite a bit, please enlarge photos for details.

It is English in origin, circa about 1780 or thereabout.
