This is probably my favorite box, I keep putting it back on display with all my dolls, then taking it back down for pictures, then putting it back...indecisive as to what I should do: keep it or sell it? So, here it is... for now anyway. I wasn't sure how to list it, antique box or vintage dolls since it's both, lol.
What I have here is a very rare French lithograph box of Louis XV with his wife as children dressed as adults, so very cute. The lithograph is under an early plastic or celluloid or I don't know what, it's clear and has protected the lithograph all these years. The box is Victorian era and has pretty rushed silk on the opening of the lid, the outside of it has old metal trim all around the lid to hold in the picture, tan velvet on the side, some Victorian pencil markings to the bottom it sits on 4 golden balls but I like to display it standing erect, and it displays that way very well.
Once the box is opened there are matching vintage French dolls made of celluloid in outfits that are very much like the image on the cover of the box. These are not antique, they are vintage probably from late 1930s - 1940s. I was told they are SFBJ but as the costumes are sewn onto them, I cannot confirm.
The box measures 8" x 5" x 2 3/4", the queen doll measures 7", the king doll is an inch shorter at 6" and that is keeping with history, lol. The dolls are in very good condition, just left inside the box for years. There is replacement gold brocade behind them.
So, the box I would date to late 1800s, the dolls 1940s, and French in origin.
