This charming, large, gold plated, medal is French. It is representation of Saint Silvia (c. 515 – c. 592) was the mother of St. Gregory the Great who was a Pope. After her husband’s death she devoted herself to the religious life and occupied ‘ A new cell by the gate of blessed Paul’.
The medal measures 1 and 5/8” (4.1cms) across and weighs a substantial 26.7 grams.
Sylvia is shown with a covered head. By her side is the dove of the Holy Spirit and the crossed keys of St. Peter. Around the edge in raised lettering is ‘Sancta Sylvia’. The artist’s signature is on the left. The gold plating has a wonderful glow with a matt finish .
At the top is a ring and a bail. The back is blank.
This beautiful medal is in fine vintage condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
