This is a very impressive and lovely French Victorian crucifix . It is made of mother of pearl and 800-900 silver quality. It dates to the second half of the nineteenth century.
This very large crucifix measures 4” (10cms) long, including the ring, by 2 and 11/16” (6.9cms) across. The mother of pearl is 4mms thick.
On a base of wondrously lustrous mother of pearl is a delicately and realistically sculpted Christ figure. Each end of the cross is ornamented a wonderful scrolling fleur de lis motifs. There is a little silver scroll with the word ‘INRI’.
At the top is a ring and a bail to hold a chain. The ring bears the French hallmark which is the boar’s head mark for 800-900 silver quality.
This truly beautiful and quite exceptional crucifix has a lovely soft patina which contrasts beautifully with the lustrous mother of pearl.
On the reverse by the lefty arm a sliver of mother of pearl is missing. However the front is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
