In nineteenth century France it was the custom to offer silver marriage medals to newly weds. They usually take the form of a couple in classical clothing on the front and space for a monogram on the reverse. This medal is smaller than usual . It tests to 800-900 silver quality and is dates 1862.
The medal measures 13/16” (2cms) across and weighs 2.9 grams.
On the front is a raised image of the couple plighting their troth. They are delicately sculpted with great attention to the detail of their clothing. The priest holds the cross aloft in his right hand and rays emanate from it. In his left hand he holds his prayer book. In this image there is more focus on the priest than on the couple. Around the edge is inscribed ‘Mariage Chrétien’ – Christian Marriage.
On the reverse is a garland of roses and in the centre the initials of the happy couple. Beneath this is the date ’18 Fev (February) 1862’.
This delightful, and very rare, piece is in excellent antique condition. It would make a thoughtful wedding gift for a couple who appreciate antique items. It will arrive in a gift box.
